It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

Oh, Monday....
In the public high school where I teach, Mondays are noisy and busy. In the blogosphere, Mondays are a day to share what you are currently reading. Hosted by Sheila of Book Journey, It's Monday! What Are You Reading is a great way to plan out your reading week, and check out what other bookish folk are reading. You never know where you might discover the next great book....If you'd like to join in, go to Book Journey this or any other Monday and add your link.

I'm about one-third of the way through Roland Merullo's Lunch with Buddha, a novel. So far I love it. It tells the story of the narrator, Otto Ringling, a recently bereaved widower, who is driving from Washington state to North Dakota with his brother-in-law, Buddhist monk Volya Rinpoche. Funny and sad, the novel is a meditation on meditation, life, love, and grief. Published by independent publisher AJAR Press, so far Lunch with Buddha is exceeding my expectations.

Next on my nightstand is Bonnie Jo Campbell's novel Once Upon a River. This is getting passed around the English Department at my school. One teacher checked the book out of our school library, and it hasn't even made its way back yet. Rave reviews from my colleagues--I can't wait to read this.
Finally, this collection of James M. Cain's novels (a beautiful Everyman's Library edition, with an introduction by Robert Polito) will help me fulfill some of my challenges for 2012. I've been meaning to read James M. Cain forever, and Polito's introduction makes a strong case for Cain on the basis of originality and style.

So, it's Monday....what are you reading?

I'm slowly making my way through A Partial History of Lost Causes, and just began the audiobook of In The Woods by Tana French.

Jennifer-How is Partial History? It's not really on my radar yet, but people seem to be talking about it. Tana French is really good, I think she could become addictive...

I read American Savior by Merullo and thought it was great so I bet Lunch with Buddha is too.

Honestly, I'm not really loving in. It's not bad, I'm just not engaging with the characters or their motivations. I'm getting through it though - it seems like it may be going somewhere and it gives me things to think about.

Oh, and I just started Into The Woods this morning and have already listened to 3 chapters on audiobook. My commute flew by and the dishes are all done! The sign of a good audiobook!
