Grad at The Curious Reader asked me in a comment about the Persephone Challenge; this challenge is sponsored by Claire at Paperback Reader and Verity at the B Files. The challenge is from May 3rd-May 9th, and readers attempt to read and post about books published by Persephone. Persephone Books is a UK publisher that reprints forgotten 20th c. novels, short stories, cookbooks, and memoirs by (mostly) women writers. My goal for this challenge is to read The World That Was Ours by Hilda Bernstein. Bernstein and her husband were activists in the fight against the evils of apartheid in South Africa; her memoir begins in July, 1963, the night of her husband's arrest. Eventually Bernstein would also be arrested. Her fascinating account details her struggle to courageously continue to oppose the politically sanctified structures which denied the majority of South Africans their basic humanity.

The World that Was Ours is a Persephone I have been anxious to read for many reasons but I don't think it will be one I shall read during this Persephone Week (I'd prefer to take my time over it, as you are doing).
